At first I was scared that Rockstar adding zombies to Red Dead Redemption would come off as silly. After seeing the first four screens for the Undead Nightmare downloadable content, I'm just scared.
It's one thing to be surrounded by zombies in a modern setting, where weapons are readily available and even the most ordinary household item becomes a deadly weapon. The thought of being chased on foot across a deserted stretch of land with no shopping mall in sight gives me the willies.
The director of Hellboy and the Oscar-winning Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro, has confirmed reports that he is working with publisher THQ on a series of video games, including one horror game that diverges from the standard video game stuff.
Del Toro tells MTV Multiplayer that, yes, he is working with the publisher of Red Faction and Saint's Row on games that could start appearing as soon as 2013. The Mexican filmmaker says he's attached to some "big games" that are due to be announced soon, including one horror game, which he vaguely describes to MTV. "It's horror...but it's a very different type of horror game," the director says. "It's not survival horror. It's truly a strange, geeky mix. It's a Lovecraftian thing. Let's leave it at that." The director is currently attached to a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's novella At the Mountains of Madness, slated for a 2013 theatrical release. That project's probably going to be pretty darn Lovecraftian too. THQ has been making significant moves in drawing big name creators this year. It has announced a deal to publish games from Ninja Gaiden creator Tomonobu Itagaki and Brutal Legend creator Tim Schafer. It also has deals with the SyFy network for projects based on Red Faction and de Blob, and recently poached Assassin's Creed creative director Patrice Désilets. Japan is getting a blue PS3 with Gran Turismo 5 bundle and it turns out a similar bundle is headed to Europe on November 5 -- sans all of that flare. Amazon UK outed the 320 GB black PS3 bundle, which comes with the Collector's Edition of Gran Turismo 5 for a hefty £284.99 ($450). It may seem a bit too pricey, but the bundle is actually a £44.99 savings on what it would cost to purchase the console and game separately, if that's any consolation to your bank account. After months of speculation, Nintendo has today revealed the launch date for the new 3DS handheld at a press conference in Tokyo. And that date, at least for the Japanese market, is February 26, 2011. The 3DS will retail there for ¥25,000 (USD$300). Two colours will be available at launch: "Aqua Blue" and "Cosmos Black" Release dates for the European and North American markets were not quite as specific, Nintendo saying that the handheld would be out in the West in March 2011. No pricing details for these regions were disclosed. The Nintendo 3DS comes bundled with a charger stand (above), an AC adapter, a 10cm Nintendo 3DS touch pen, a 2GB SD card, six augmented reality cards as well as instruction booklets.
According to Nintendo, the new functions include a slide pad, a motion sensor and a gyro-sensor. The portable will have parental controls like the Nintendo DSi and the DSi XL portables before it. It is possible to play games downloaded off the 3DS's Virtual Console as well as games downloaded onto a Nintendo DSi and DSi XL. The Nintendo 3DS works with game cartridges in the Nintendo DS series. The Nintendo 3DS is 134mm by 74mm. It is 21mm thick and weighs 230 grams. The top screen is 3.53 inches and with an liquid crystal display of 800 x 240 pixels. The button screen is 3.02 inches with a liquid crystal display of 320 x 240 pixels. It has two outer 0.3 megapixel cameras and one inside the portable's clamshell. A new entry in the survival horror Fatal Frame series is in the cards for the Nintendo Wii. Details on the game are scant, but the new entry is expected to be out next year.
With Mio and Mayu Amakura from Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly in these screens, it looks like this could be a Wii remake for that title, rather than a completely new game. Harmonix had previously hinted that DLC for Rock Band 3's "Pro" mode would a bit more expensive than the vanilla offerings because it required "a lot more work to do." Speaking with IGN, MTV Games' Paul DeGooyer clarified exactly how the pricing will differ for the upcoming sequel. He explained that "all DLC released for Rock Band 3 will be fully Rock Band 3-compatible, which means it'll come with Pro Mode for keyboard and drums, harmony mode, etc." However, Pro Mode for guitar will be sold separately. "If you're not interested in Pro Mode for guitar, you can still get the DLC that should conform to our current DLC pricing, and you get Pro Mode for all your other instruments." The cost of Pro guitar will be $1, the interview reveals. "The alternative would be of course to include it (in the regular download) and up the price for everybody, which I don't think is really fair," DeGooyer argued. Additionally, he reveals that not all DLC tracks will even offer Pro notes for guitar, saying certain bands' "guitar parts wouldn't rise to the level that they would need to have pro mode authoring associated with them." Ouch. There are plans to retrofit earlier DLC with Pro tracks, however DeGooyer was unable to clarify how the process would work. Apparently, the studio is having trouble making a system that "recognizes people who have already purchased" DLC in order to "be able to supply the updated file at a discount." A collection of screenshots and concept art for Resistance 3 have surfaced, painting a wonderfully dark picture of the United States in the grip of the Chimeran forces. Can Joseph Capelli save the day? Kotakuite Darkos87 pointed us towards these fresh Resistance 3 screenshots and concept art pieces on Flickr, giving us our first look at the third game in Insomniac's hit series since the live action trailer shown at GamesCom.
And what of the new protagonist? The screenshots call him Capelli, which makes him Joseph Evan Capelli, Nathan Hale's squadmate and helper of sorts from Resistance 2. It looks like Capelli will be taking up the fight where Nathan left off at the end of the last game. In this short video you can see just how massive and strong the cast of Lionhead's epic Fable 3 really is.
Simon Pegg, Ben Kingsley, John Cleese, and Michael Fassbender headline an all-star cast of men and women with British accents in this voice acting installment of the Lionhead video diaries. The voice cast for Fable III is one of the most talented gathering of voices ever assembled. Particularly impressive is Sir Ben Kingsley in his first video game voice acting role. The over-the-top personality that was so out of place in movies like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time lends itself well to a video game character. It's lovely to hear the return old voices like Zoë Wannamaker as Theresa and Stephen Fry as Reaver, but I'm particularly pleased with the inclusion of Nicholas Hoult. Nicholas played Tony in the first and second series of British teen drama Skins, a show I was oddly addicted to earlier this year. He is portraying Elliot, the potential male love interest to the female Fable II main character. How appropriate! Uncharted 2: Among Thieves -- Kotaku's 2009 "Game of the Year" -- is finally getting a Game of the Year Edition. The $49.99 package includes the well-received sequel on a Blu-ray disc, as well as a "super voucher" which allows users to download $35 worth of post-launch DLC, including:
