With an opening of $73.2 million worldwide in just three days for Resident Evil: Afterlife, it's no surprise that Screen Gems would want to continue the franchise. Vulture caught up with star Milla Jovovich this weekend who said that's exactly the plan."This new 'Resident Evil' is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide. It's the biggest movie in the franchise," she said. "So we're definitely going to make another one."Jovovich added that director Paul W.S. Anderson, her husband, already has some ideas for the fifth installment and they are looking for ideas from the fans as well this time."We've been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it's probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It's going to be a more interactive process." HOLY SHIT!
Natural Selection CEO Matty Beckerman announced today at the Toronto International Film Festival a deal for the company to fully finance and produce a feature adaptation of the Philip Carlo tome "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" and have attached Mickey Rourke to star. David McKenna (who wrote American History X, Blow) is penning the screenplay based on the eponymous book written by Carlo. Beckerman will produce. Graham Taylor at WME Global will handle North American sales on this title. "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" is the true story of Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski who for over 40 years led a completely secretive double life as both a notorious professional assassin and a doting husband and father in suburban New Jersey."Richard Kuklinski's life and Philip Carlo's true account, three years in the making, is fascinating and unlike any mafia story that's been brought to the big screen," says Beckerman. "This is a role Mickey Rourke was born to play and as a huge fan of David McKenna's work, I am thrilled to have him on board," says Beckerman.Carlo was born and raised in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, considered a major area for Mafia activity. Carlo's first book, "Stolen Flower," was about an abducted eight year old girl used by pornographers, and the efforts of the Neapolitan Mafia to get the child back. Carlo's second book "The Night Stalker: The Life and Crimes of Richard Ramirez," the second most popular true crime book after Capote's "In Cold Blood," is considered the definitive book on Ramirez, who terrorized Los Angeles county for fourteen months, breaking into homes in the middle of the night, taking twenty-nine lives. "The Ice Man," which follows the life and crimes of Kuklinski, a two-hundred-twenty pound Mafia hit-man became a New York Times bestseller. Diagnosed in 2005 with Lou Gehrig's Disease, Carlo is currently researching a book about Colombian drug lord Juan Carlos Ramirez Abbadia, with the full unprecedented access of the DEA.Carlo said: "When I met Matty Beckerman, I immediately knew he was the producer to take the "Iceman" to the bigscreen. He immediately grasped the significance of a loving husband, caring father and a man who is a professional killer who travels around the world filling murder contracts at will, displaying an animal-like predatorial ability we've never seen before or since – an excessively powerful man who could kill with his bare hands or a long list of weapons, his wife and family having no idea. As bad as Richard was, he hated rapists with a passion and he could never see a child abused and not do something." Andrew Garfield talked more to The Associated Press about starring as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot. He says he's been a fan since he was four years old and that the appeal of the character is "his youth, his relatability, his struggle. He was just this skinny boy. He was a skinny boy who felt stronger on the inside than he looked on the outside, and I related to it immediately, and it stayed with me as I grew up. "Every single generation of the comic, the cartoons and the movies, it all means a great deal to me. It was always something that gave me hope as a skinny little kid whose sense of injustice about the world didn't match his sense of strength about his body. I found it so inspiring and uplifting and reassuring. To be a part of that mythology and that legacy is a true honor."Garfield's Never Let Me Go co-star Carey Mulligan added that "those big superhero films or comic films only ever work when the actors are completely truthful. If they go in with a stylized, comic book version of the performance, it's not going to work. But I know that Andrew will play the truth of what it's like to be that man in that situation." "I think it'll be like what Heath Ledger did with the Joker," she said. "Andrew, he has no other way of working other than doing things with complete truth."Garfield is about to start his training regimen for the Marc Webb-directed Spidey film that begins shooting in December."We're just talking about where we want to go with it and what kind of body shape it should be. What the skill set should be," Garfield said. "I know I'm going to be doing a lot of flexibility training and a lot of strength training, because I have to swing and stuff. I'm just guessing, but it's all kind of early stages.""I'm not doing it for any of the peripheral stuff. We could be making a short film, a short Spider-Man film with an unknown director, with no money, and I'd do it just to be able to play as Spider-Man," the actor explained. "That's like a childhood fantasy come to life. It's an adult fantasy, as well. I'm still climbing up the door frames in my house. It's just a bigger space I'm going to be climbing in now, with a bit more money behind it, and the cameras filming it." The untitled Spider-Man film opens in 3D and 2D theaters on July 3, 2012. RZA has found an unlikely costar for his The Man with the Iron Fists in the form of Russell Crowe, reports E! Online.
Crowe, who worked with RZA on American Gangster, will play opposite the musician/actor for the period Kung Fu film, set to shoot in Shanghai this December. RZA will write (along with coproducer Eli Roth), direct and star as a blacksmith in feudal China. Crowe's specific role is unknown at this time, but RZA indicates that he'll see his fair share of on-screen fighting. Universal Pictures has released the official synopsis for Fast Five, directed by Justin Lin from a script by Chris Morgan. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he's not the only one on their tail.Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. In the latest issue of the UK's PSM3 magazine, Batman: Arkham City director Sefton Hill outlined an upgrade to Batman's "Detective Mode" designed to help him extract information. Batman will now be able to scan a criminal database to find likely informants among henchmen, and then interrogate them to get what he needs -- like extra Riddler clues. "The Riddler continues to taunt the Dark Knight with mind-bending puzzles and exploration challenges," Hill said, "but the location of his biggest secrets are known only to him and people he's told. Rather than unlocking their locations using maps, Batman will be able to scan a gang of thugs to find a potential informant." We're excited about the new gameplay mechanic -- as well as the challenge, described by Hill, of making sure not to knock out the one guy in a crowd you need to talk to. But mostly we're happy for the Riddler. He's well on his way to figuring out the secret to successful crime: not immediately giving the world's greatest detective any clues about how to find your stash. It's finally, really, actually ... maybe going to happen at this point. The rumors are true: Gearbox Software and 2K Games have taken on the Herculean task of completing and releasing 3D Realms' unfinished Duke Nukem Forever. The project was officially unveiled today at PAX during a livestreamed presentation at the 2K Games booth and announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. "It's coming out in 2011," Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said during the presentation. (Of course, we're skeptical about any release date associated with this particular title.)
Gearbox began finishing Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009, according to The Wall Street Journal. "Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," Pitchford told WSJ. "We're in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill," Pitchford added. "We need to get past the shock and awe, and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan." Duke Nukem Forever is a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D and will feature both a single-player campaign and multiplayer. "Aliens come and say they're going to be our friends, and Duke knows this isn't going to work out," Pitchford revealed of the plot. "Duke once again is in the pivotal spot and it's up to him to save the world." "Borat" and "Bruno" star Sacha Baron Cohen will play Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in an untitled drama focusing on his glory days, reports Reuters. The film is being written by Peter Morgan (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland). No director is attached yet.Shooting will begin next year, said producer Graham King, whose GK Films is partnering on the project with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca Productions, and Queen manager Jim Beach. The project has the cooperation of Mercury's estate and the three surviving members of Queen. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor will oversee the musical content of the film, which will feature both original Queen music and Mercury solo music.
The film will focus on a period of a few years leading up to what was arguably Queen's greatest moment: its performance at the Live Aid charity concert in 1985, when the band mesmerized London's Wembley Stadium and a worldwide TV audience with such hits as "We Will Rock You" and "Radio Ga Ga."The band continued touring and recording even as Mercury's health deteriorated. A day after finally admitting he had AIDS, Mercury succumbed to the disease in 1991, at age 45. Keanu Reeves told MTV that a third "Bill & Ted" movie isn't out of the question.
"We're trying," said Reeves. "Alex and I are still friends and we're talking, and we're talking to Chris and Ed. They're going to try and see if they can write something. To me, I'd love to play the role. I'd love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again.""We'll see what they do. If it's a film that can stand up on its own, and I'm meeting people now, they've shown the film to their kids," he added. "We just seek to entertain, and if that could be something that could be worthwhile on its own..." You can watch the interview using the player below! |
