The relatively young CBS Films has bought the rights to the franchise and this film will be based specifically around 2011′s Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which was a prequel to the 2000 original.
There is a chance that producers Roy Lee (The Departed, The Woman in Black) and Adrian Askarieh – who is behind many other videogame adaptations including the previous Hitman and the upcoming Just Cause and Kane & Lynch – can break the mold with a worthy feature. Working closely with Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal, it’s interesting to see CBS Films expand into more blockbuster territory. Faster and The Mechanic didn’t exactly light up the box-office or critics, but they’ve got two highly promising fall features, Martin McDonagh‘s In Bruges follow-up Seven Psychopaths and Coens-scripted Gambit. Today Variety announced that they've got the official word on who will be starring in the upcoming film based on Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series.
The leading role will be going to Michael Fassbender who also played Magneto in X-Men: First Class as well as a leading role in Prometheus. Ubisoft has said though that this lead character may not actually be Desmond as most people assumed. "Fassbender will play the lead role, but it's too soon to say exactly which character that will be," a Ubisoft representative told Joystiq. Interestingly, Fassbender will also be lending his apparently deep pockets to the project as a producer. Ubisoft has so far insisted they retain control over who directs and writes the film. With a bit of respected Hollywood talent on board, the AC film is gathering a bit of momentum. We're looking forward to seeing who Ubisoft taps to write and direct the project. We're also eagerly awaiting an official announcement that the film will not involve Jake (A.K.A. Chesty Shirtless) Gyllenhaal in any way. Cold Stream, the massive, much-anticipated and acceptably murderous DLC pack for Left 4 Dead 2, is set to launch on PC, Mac and Xbox 360 on July 24. Cold Stream includes a fan-made campaign, and ports of Left 4 Dead's Death Toll, Dead Air, Blood Harvest and Crash Course levels.
Cold Stream first entered beta in March 2011 and is still open for PC and Mac on Steam, making this launch more of an official, polishing update for those platforms. Valve initially said Cold Stream would launch "some time after Portal 2," and really, it's not as if they were wrong about that one. Clever, Valve. Clever. |
