DLC has become a staple of modern day gaming. For those unfamiliar with the term, it stands for downloadable content. Nowadays, it isn't a surprise to see an announcement of a new map pack for your shooters, or more quests for your RPG's, or more levels for your real time strategy games. Most of the time, the quality of the DLC equals that of the game on the disc. So why isn't this content on the disc when you buy it? It's hard for me to believe that the concepts for the DLC, specifically map packs for shooters, were formulated too late to be on the disc. Games should not have DLC, because when I pay $60, I'm expecting a full game. Not half of the entire package.

Activision claims to have sold 6.5 million copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 24 hours, making it the most successful entertainment launch of anything, ever. The game took $400 million in sales in one day, according to ChartTrack estimates, beating Black Ops by $40 million and Modern Warfare 2 by $90 million. Both those games set the previous records for day-one sales. This is only two territories, remember - European, Australian and rest of world sales aren't even taken into account. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick claims that "Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings," two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time." Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has done well critically, picking up a score of 9.0 from us and great scores from many other outlets, but has suffered a fan backlash that's seen its Metacritic user score drop as low as 1.7 over the past few days. {IGN} For a brief amount of time, we thought Nintendo's special Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary 3DS bundle would go the way of Xenoblade and The Last Story, never to see the light of day in North America. That might not be the case after all. A leaked GameStop ad for Black Friday features not only a Flame Red 3DS bundle that comes with Super Mario 3D Land, but highlights the newly announced Zelda version of the 3DS as well. Featuring a gold and black Hylian design, the bundle will also come with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The special edition 3DS will be priced at $199.99 or as little as $99.99 if you're willing to trade in old DS systems. Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these plans, but if GameStop has a full ad ready to go, it does seem a bit likely. We'll let you know when the press releases catch up with the ads. {IGN} The official sales in the video game market for the month of October has been released by the NPD (National Purchase Diary). Nintendo said today that through the first eight months in the U.S., the Nintendo 3DS is outpacing first year sales of the original DS released in 2004 According to retail tracking firm NPD, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 1.65 million units to date in the U.S. Nintendo notes the Nintendo DS sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months, with 50 percent of sales occurring during the holiday season. With the releases of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, Nintendo expects 3DS sales exceed the DS through the remaining four months. “With a massive lineup of software on the way and the first-year sales record of Nintendo DS in its sights, Nintendo 3DS enters its first holiday season with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. Additionally, Nintendo sold 675,000 combined hardware units in October, according to NPD. This includes more than 250,000 units of Nintendo 3DS, nearly 250,000 Wii systems and 180,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems. {GameInformer} According to a rumor steaming from leaked information out of Nintendo, a second CPU inside 3DS could be unlocked for developers, which would provide studios with 25% more processing power for games. This processor was previously used only for the handheld’s operating system, according to NintendoWorldReport, and it has also been reported that Nintendo has found a more “eficient method of running stereoscopic 3D images” which puts less strain on the CPU. NWR also reports that eShop downloadable titles could be receiving a bump in storage space from 16MB to 512MB, which would be provided to the handhelds via a patch. {VG247} Ubisoft has hinted that if Rayman: Origins is successful enough, producer Michael Ancel will be greenlit for other projects – like the long-requested sequel to Beyond Good & Evil. “If all the people that love Beyond Good & Evil understand [Ancel] is more than a one trick pony and if Rayman: Origins does well, it gives him more leeway for other opportunities because he has to build up his studio,” Ubisoft’s Tony Key told Industry Gamers. The recent success of the original Beyond Good & Evil is helping chances of a sequel, too. “Beyond Good & Evil HD is doing very well on PSN and Xbox Live and there’s a lot of people coming back, and if they choose to do a sequel the audience is bigger than before,” Key said. Rayman: Origins is a four player co-operative platformer, expected on PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 this month. The US gets it November 15, while PAL territories have to wait until November 25. “Just like how Beyond Good & Evil had a whimsical style but included gameplay for adults, Rayman: Origins will appeal to more than just younger gamers,” Key assured potential Beyond Good & Evil 2 supporters. {VG247} |
