With Warner Bros. now moving forward with Akira, it’s time to begin casting.

In talks to play the lead role of Kaneda is Tron's Garret Hedlund, and sources are now telling Twitch that Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman have been offered roles in the film. Oldman has been offered to play the role of the Colonel, with Carter offered the role of Lady Miyako.

While both Carter and Oldman are extroidinary actors, fans will still be complaining about the studio whitewashing the cast. Although, it’s understandable complaining about a Caucasion actor portraying an Asian character.

The long in development Akira live-action remake has apparently been greenlit.Variety reports that Warner Bros. has greenlit the project with director Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) attached to direct. What's more, they may have already found their leading man in TRON: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund.

Famously adapted as an anime in 1988, Akira will be based on the original manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, depicting a sci-fi cyberpunk dystopia, but will relocate the action to "New Manhattan" rather than "Neo-Tokyo."

Hedlund's involvement is only speculated at the moment, but he would up be for the part of the original story's Kaneda (there is not yet word on whether or not the character names will be changed).

Budgeted at $90 million, Akira could shoot as early as February of next year.

Back in May, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, the film and TV production arm of the game publishing company, announced it was developing 3D feature films based on Assassin's CreedSplinter Cell and Ghost ReconVariety now says that the Assassin's Creed adaptation has found a home at Sony Pictures.

The fourth installment of the games, Assassin's Creed: Revelations is set to hit the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 15.

Earlier this year, Jean de Rivieres, Ubisoft's senior VP of international marketing and distribution, said "Our strategy is not to diversify but to bolster the appeal of our franchises -- that's why we want to make sure our films will reflect the brands accurately and consolidate our fan base while expanding beyond the games' primary target audience."

Baronnet added, "We want to keep ownership, retain control over the film content, and we're open to work with studios on the development of our projects, and eventually collaborate on the pre-casting, pre-budget and script."

Sony is also developing big screen adaptations of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and inFAMOUS.

Rade as Boris the Blade in Snatch.
/Film reports that [Rade] Sherbedgia will play Murad, the father of a kidnapper slain by Bryan Mills (Neeson) in the first film. Murad is described as a vengeful man who gives orders and doesn’t take them. When Murad takes Mills and his wife hostage, their daughter is enlisted to help save them.

Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge, and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one.

Olivier Megaton (The Transporter 3, Colombiana) directs from a script by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen.

I don't get a lot of chances to post a title like this one but it is true.

Steven Soderbergh is in pre-production on his long gestating Liberace bio-pic Behind The Candelabra.

Backed by HBO Films with Jerry Weintraub producing and a script by Richard Lagravanese (The Fisher King), Behind The Candelabra has locked up its stars with Michael Douglas playing Liberace and Matt Damon his younger lover Scott Thorson. Production is now slated to start in summer 2012.

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon...creepy.

Sources tell Twitch that Universal Pictures are currently looking in to the possibility of shooting Fast 6 and Fast 7 back to back in Europe throughout 2012 and, furthermore, that they are entering into preliminary conversations with Jason Statham to explore the possibility of the action star joining one or both films.

Statham is far from a sure thing at this point but if ever a star made more sense for this franchise - particularly if they are shifting to a European base of operations - then I am hard pressed to imagine who it might be.

Director Justin Lin recently exited the director's role for Terminator 5 due to a scheduling conflict. If this back to back talk pans out that would go a very long way to explaining how that conflict arose.

Johann Urb
While there will be several returning cast members from the Resident Evil film franchise in Retribution, KillerFilm heard the other day that Kevin Durand and Johann Urb joined the cast. Nothing was mentioned about Durand’s role, but the details for Urb’s role seemed to hint he would be playing fan-favorite Leon Kennedy in the film. Shock Til You Drop is now confirming that speculation.

In the games, Kennedy was a member of Racoon City policy, but he eventually became a member of an anti-Umbrella resistance organization. It seems we’ll be getting that same version of him in this film.

Rooney Mara is a name on the rise. She's starring in the remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo alongside Daniel Craig.

With Josh Brolin now confirmed for the lead of Spike Lee's remake of Oldboy and the vultures circling Christian Bale for the villain role the question of the moment is who will play the female lead?

And sources are telling TwitchFilm that the actress being targeted to play the character - renamed Marie in this version of the story - is Rooney Mara.

The US version of Oldboy is set up at Mandate with Doug Davison and Roy Lee producing and Mark Protosevich (ThorI Am Legend) writing the script.
